Outline and Lesson Goal

Principles and Applications

I. The Cry of the Afflicted (102:1-11)

  • Principle: In our Affliction, we can find Hope by Crying Out to God for Help.
  • Application: What’s afflicting you right now? How are you bringing out those afflictions before the LORD? How desperate are you for the Lord’s intervention?
  • Scripture Reference

In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice out of His temple,
And my cry for help before Him came into His ears.
Psalms 18:6 (NASB)

II. The Hope for Jerusalem (102:12-22)

  • Principle: In our Affliction, we can find Hope in God’s Promise to Restore His People.
  • Application: What hope do you see for yourself in the promised restoration of Jerusalem and God’s people?
  • Scripture Reference

10 Yet the number of the sons of Israel Will be like the sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or numbered; And in the place
Where it is said to them, “You are not My people,”
It will be said to them, “You are the sons of the living God.”
11And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together,
And they will appoint for themselves one leader,
And they will go up from the land, For great will be the day of Jezreel.
Hosea 1:10-11 (NASB)

III. The Promise of Eternity (102:23-28)

  • Principle: In our Affliction, we can find Hope in God’s Promise of Eternal Life.
  • Application: How is your life demonstrating that you are fixed on the promise of eternity vs. the problems of our present time?
  • Scripture Reference

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,
18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NASB)
