Responding to Our Calling Part I

Lesson Summary:

Paul calls on Timothy to fully engage in the spiritual battle as a wholly committed soldier of Jesus Christ.

Focus Passage: 2 Timothy 2:1-13

Programming Note: I have divided the teaching from II Timothy Chapter 2 in two parts because we have a lot of ground to cover.

In total there are four divisions that I have outlined from this passage.

Part I of the lesson covers verses 1-13 (1st 2 divisions) and that’s the  focus of this lesson.

Part II covers verses 14-26 (last 2 divisions) and that lesson is available here.

Outline and Lesson Goal

Principles and Applications

I. Fully Commit to the Cause (2:1-7)

  • Principle: Responding to Our Calling Requires a Change in Priorities.
  • Application: What other things are competing for your attention? What priorities in your life are higher than God’s priorities for you?
  • Scripture Reference

61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.”
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:61-62 (NASB)

II. Be Ready to Pay the Price (2:8-13)

  • Principle: Responding to Our Calling Requires Paying the Ultimate Price.
  • Application: How willing are you ready to pay the full price for a complete commitment to the cause of the Gospel? What are you afraid of losing?
  • Scripture Reference

25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
Matthew 16:25-27 (NASB)
