Outline and Lesson Goal

Principles and Applications

I. Jonah Rebels against God (Jonah 1:1-6)

  • Principle: Disobedience to God’s Commands is Sin.
  • Application: What has God called on you to do in your life that you have refused to do until this time?
  • Scripture Reference

22 Samuel said, “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”
I Samuel 15:22-23 (NASB)

II. Jonah is Pursued and Captured by God (Jonah 1:7-17)

  • Principle: Running Away from God is Futile.
  • Application: How have you attempted to run away from God? What signs are there in your life that God is in pursuit of you? How is He trying to get your attention?
  • Scripture Reference

Where can I go from Your Spirit?Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will lead me,And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even the darkness is not dark to You,And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.
Psalms 139:7-12 (NASB)
