Outline and Lesson Goal

Principles and Applications

II. The Lament Over Babylon (18:9-19)

  • Principle: God’s People Reject the False Promise of Babylon, the Evil World System.
  • Application: What causes you to mourn? The loss of material wealth and possessions or the spiritual condition of our world?
  • Scripture Reference

25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
Matthew 16:25-27 (NASB 2020)

III. The End of Babylon (18:20-24)

  • Principle: God’s People Can Rejoice in the Certain Arrival of His Kingdom.
  • Application: How are you encouraged knowing that one day God will put a definite and complete end to evil and wickedness?
  • Scripture Reference

15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,
“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
16 And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God,
17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
18 The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged,
and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints,
and those who fear your name, both small and great,
and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
