Principles and Applications

I. Prepare for Battle (1:1-7)

  • Principle: Children of God are Marked by Obedience to His Commands.
  • Application: How prepared are you to fight for the faith? How well do you know the faith once for all handed to the saints? How well are you living out that faith?
  • Scripture Reference

the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother
I John 3:8-10 (NASB)

II. Know Your Enemy (1:8-16)

  • Principle: Children of God are Led by the Spirit and not the Flesh.
  • Application: How does your life show that you are living by the Spirit and not the flesh?
  • Scripture Reference

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB)

III. Protect Yourselves (1:17-23)

  • Principle: God’s Children Encourage One Another to Stay Strong in the Faith.
  • Application: Who could you encourage today to live a life that’s truly godly? How are you guarding yourself against the dangers of sin in our world?
  • Scripture Reference

14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.
I Thessalonians 5:14-15 (NASB)

IV. Trust the Commander in Chief (1:24-25)

  • Principle: God’s Children are never Forsaken by their Father.
  • Application: How are you encouraged by the promises of a God who will never leave you nor forsake you?
  • Scripture Reference

Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”
Hebrews 13:5-6 (NASB)
